Railways Ramps up Safety Measures as Cyclone Ditwah nears Tamil Nadu

As Cyclone Ditwah advances toward the Tamil Nadu coast, Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed the preparedness of Southern Railway to ensure passenger safety and minimise disruption to operations. The review, held with the General Manager and senior officials of Southern Railway, focused on precautionary protocols, emergency response systems and communication strategies for coastal regions likely to be affected by the cyclone.

During the review, the Minister stressed the immediate establishment of dedicated helplines and passenger-assistance counters at major stations. These are expected to support travellers who may face delays, cancellations or rerouting as a result of weather-related restrictions. He also highlighted the importance of clear, timely communication so that passengers have updated information throughout the cyclone’s impact period.

Reiterating Indian Railways’ commitment to public safety, Vaishnaw directed officials to activate War Rooms at the divisional, zonal and Railway Board levels. These units will monitor real-time developments, coordinate decision-making and respond swiftly to any emerging risks. He urged authorities to maintain a high-alert posture and ensure that safety protocols—such as speed restrictions, inspections of vulnerable rail sections and pre-positioning of restoration teams—are implemented effectively.

The Minister further instructed railway officials to maintain close coordination with state disaster management teams and local administrations. This includes synchronising evacuation efforts in coastal areas, facilitating movement of essential supplies and ensuring readiness for rapid restoration of services once weather conditions stabilise. Continuous communication with passengers, he emphasised, must remain a priority until operations return to normal.

With these measures in place, Indian Railways aims to protect travellers, safeguard infrastructure and ensure essential connectivity during the cyclone’s passage.
