BSNL Rolls Out VoWiFi Nationwide

State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi), also known as Wi-Fi Calling, from New Year’s Day. The service is now available to BSNL customers across all telecom circles in India, enabling seamless and high-quality voice connectivity even in areas with poor mobile network coverage.

VoWiFi allows customers to make and receive voice calls and messages over a Wi-Fi network, ensuring reliable communication in locations such as homes, offices, basements and remote areas where mobile signals are weak or unavailable. The service is supported across all circles and is accessible using the customer’s existing mobile number and standard phone dialler.

Based on IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology, VoWiFi supports seamless handovers between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, allowing calls to continue uninterrupted as users move between coverage zones. The service does not require any third-party applications, offering a simple and integrated calling experience.

The feature is particularly beneficial for rural and remote regions where mobile coverage remains limited, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection is available. This includes connectivity through BSNL Bharat Fiber as well as other broadband services. In addition to improving call quality, VoWiFi helps reduce congestion on mobile networks and is being offered free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calls.

The launch marks a key milestone in BSNL’s ongoing network modernisation programme and reflects its commitment to improving digital connectivity across the country, especially in underserved and hard-to-reach areas.

VoWiFi is supported on most modern smartphones, with customers required only to enable Wi-Fi Calling in their handset settings. For device compatibility and assistance, users can visit their nearest BSNL customer service centre or contact the BSNL helpline at 18001503.
