Div Com Kashmir Urges Fast Tracking Of Jhelum Water Transport Project
The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir has called for the fast-tracking of the Jhelum water transport project, urging district administrations and relevant agencies to accelerate planning and clearances. In a meeting convened at the divisional headquarters, the commissioner instructed officials from irrigation, public health engineering and municipal departments to prioritise the project and coordinate survey and design work. The directive emphasised removal of administrative bottlenecks and close monitoring to ensure timely mobilisation of resources and contractors.
Officials were told to integrate environmental safeguards into all stages of work, including river ecology assessments and measures to protect wetlands and fisheries. The project was framed as essential for securing drinking water supplies, enhancing irrigation networks and improving river flow to mitigate flooding risks during the monsoon. The commissioner highlighted the need for transparent engagement with local communities and gram sabhas to address resettlement and livelihood concerns where works may affect riverine zones.
To expedite execution, a divisional coordination committee will oversee feasibility studies, detailed project reports and statutory clearances, with representatives from technical agencies and local government. The committee was instructed to identify funding options and synchronise approvals to avoid sequential delays, while ensuring procurement follows established norms. Officials were also directed to prepare a realistic implementation schedule and to report fortnightly on progress to enable adaptive management.
Authorities expect that timely implementation will strengthen water security for urban and rural populations, support agricultural productivity and reduce flood vulnerability in low-lying areas. The divisional office will maintain oversight until project milestones are achieved, with an emphasis on accountability and periodic public updates to track outcomes. Close coordination with state and central departments was portrayed as crucial to convert planning into on-ground results.
