Centre Allocates Rs 153,850 mn For National Highways In Maharashtra

The central government has allocated Rs 153,850 mn for the development of national highways in Maharashtra, the Union minister of road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced. The allocation, equivalent to Rs 153.85 bn, will be administered through the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The funds are intended to support the planning, expansion and maintenance of existing corridors and the construction of new stretches to enhance connectivity across the state.

NHAI will allocate the resources to projects that prioritise widening, resurfacing and safety improvements, while also funding the construction of bridges and grade separations where required. Emphasis will be placed on improving freight corridors and links to industrial hubs in order to reduce congestion and travel times. The allocation is expected to cover preconstruction studies, land acquisition assistance and contractor mobilisation, subject to statutory clearances and tender processes.

Implementation will be coordinated with state agencies and municipal bodies to ensure integration with urban and rural networks, and to align priorities for commuter and commercial traffic. Monitoring mechanisms will include periodic reviews and project audits to track milestones and expenditure. The focus on durable materials and improved design standards is intended to reduce life cycle costs and lower maintenance requirements over time, thereby delivering better value for public expenditure.

Officials indicated that the allocation will support regional economic activity by improving access to markets and reducing transportation bottlenecks. Road safety outcomes are expected to improve as capacity increases and critical pinch points are addressed. While timelines will depend on clearances and contracting schedules, the infusion of capital is likely to accelerate several priority projects and to stimulate employment in construction and related sectors across Maharashtra.
