Prime Minister Lauds Three Million Households Adopting Rooftop Solar
The Prime Minister has lauded the achievement of three million (mn) households adopting rooftop solar under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, describing it as a commendable milestone in the nation's clean energy journey. He highlighted that the initiative has empowered households across the country and acknowledged the beneficiaries for embracing rooftop solar. The announcement was made through the Prime Minister's Office release issued on 23 February 2026. The scheme targets households across states and union territories.
The milestone reflects the rapid uptake of household-level solar installations and is expected to support greater energy self-reliance and lower household electricity costs. The PM Surya Ghar scheme forms an integral part of government efforts to build an energy-secure, green and future-ready India, according to the release. The scheme's emphasis on rooftop systems aims to expand distributed generation and reduce pressure on the grid. Observers expect the trend to encourage complementary investments in storage and smart metering.
The Prime Minister responded to a social media post by the Union Minister responsible for the related portfolio and conveyed his appreciation to those who adopted rooftop solar, noting the benefits in savings, sustainability and self-reliance. The release emphasised that the scheme supports citizens in adopting clean technologies and contributes to national targets for renewable deployment. Officials described the achievement as a step towards mainstreaming rooftop solar across urban and rural households.
Experts within the administration said that continued uptake will depend on streamlined implementation, awareness campaigns and access to financing mechanisms for households. The government intends to monitor progress and explore measures to enhance adoption rates while ensuring system quality and consumer protection. Stakeholders emphasised that quality assurance and standardised installation practices remain priorities. The milestone is presented as an indicator of growing public participation in the transition to low carbon energy.
