Hindustan Zinc, Tata Steel Expand EcoZen Use

Hindustan Zinc Limited, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and among the top five silver producers globally, has strengthened its long-standing partnership with Tata Steel to expand the integration of EcoZen, its low-carbon zinc solution, into sustainable steel manufacturing.
The collaboration reflects both companies’ commitment to embedding climate considerations into industrial processes and procurement strategies. EcoZen, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc, is produced using renewable energy and has a verified carbon footprint of less than one tonne of CO? equivalent per tonne of zinc—around 75 per cent lower than the global industry average. By reducing emissions at the raw material stage, EcoZen enables downstream industries to lower value-chain emissions and support decarbonisation goals.
Arun Misra, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said, “EcoZen represents our vision to offer sustainable metal solutions that support the evolving needs of global manufacturing. Our partnership with Tata Steel is a significant milestone in scaling up the adoption of low-carbon zinc and reinforcing greener supply chains across India’s industrial ecosystem.”
Zinc plays a critical role in galvanising steel to prevent corrosion and extend service life, making it essential across infrastructure, automotive, renewable energy, electronics and energy storage sectors. Since zinc coating contributes to the embedded carbon footprint of galvanised steel, the use of low-carbon zinc delivers measurable downstream benefits. EcoZen can help avoid approximately 400 kg of CO2 emissions per tonne of steel galvanised compared to conventional zinc, offering a pathway to reduce Scope 3 emissions.
Commenting on the collaboration, Ranjan Sinha, Chief Procurement Officer, Tata Steel, said, “Tata Steel congratulates its strategic partner, Hindustan Zinc, on the delivery of EcoZen to our Sahibabad plant. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to sustainable practices and advancing green technologies within our supplier ecosystem.”
Hindustan Zinc has been a strategic partner to Tata Steel for over two decades. The expanded engagement under the EcoZen initiative marks a progression in this association, combining operational expertise with a focus on decarbonisation, responsible sourcing and sustainable practices.
Through this collaboration, both companies aim to support climate-aligned procurement, reduce Scope 3 emissions and contribute to India’s transition towards low-carbon industrial growth.
