MHIEC Completes Relay Centre Project In Nagasaki

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIEC) has completed construction of the Nanbu Relay Center in Minamishimabara City for the Ken’ou-Kennan Clean Authority in Nagasaki Prefecture.

The project includes the development of the new facility and the operation of three relay centres, including the existing Tobu and Seibu sites, under a contract awarded in 2024.

The initiative is aimed at enabling the efficient transfer of combustible waste from multiple municipalities to the Ken’ou-Kennan Clean Center in Isahaya City, which is scheduled to commence operations in April 2026.

The Nanbu Relay Center is designed to process approximately 43 tonnes of combustible waste per day, using a compactor-container system to compress and reduce waste volume before transportation.

The total contract value for construction and operations stands at approximately 11.375 billion yen. MHIEC, in joint venture with Jukan Operation Co., Ltd., has also secured a 20-year operation and management contract for all three relay centres under a Design-Build-Operate (DBO) model.

Relay centres function as key nodes in waste management systems, enabling efficient logistics by transferring waste from collection vehicles to larger transport units for onward processing or disposal.

MHIEC, part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, continues to expand its environmental infrastructure portfolio, focusing on integrated solutions across construction, operation and lifecycle management of waste treatment facilities.
