Adani commissions 1,000 MW HVDC link for Mumbai
2026-04-15
Adani Energy Solutions has commissioned a 1,000 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link between Kudus and Aarey, strengthening power infrastructure in Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The project, executed by its subsidiary Adani Electricity Mumbai Infrastructure Limited, includes a 30 km overhead line and a 50 km underground corridor, designed for dense urban conditions. It also features the world’s first compact HVDC substation.
The link enables greater flow of renewable energy into Mumbai by improving connectivity with the national grid. It is expected to reduce reliance on in-city generation, enhance grid resilience and lower outage risks, particularly in the wake of vulnerabilities exposed during the 2020 Mumbai blackout.
Using Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based HVDC technology, the project allows precise control of power flows, improved voltage stability and faster restoration through black-start capability.
Commenting on the development, Kandarp Patel, CEO, Adani Energy Solutions, said, “The project enhances grid stability, decongests existing networks and strengthens the city’s energy security… marking a step towards a cleaner, more resilient energy future.”
The Kudus–Aarey link is among the largest urban HVDC infeeds globally, supporting Mumbai’s growing demand while enabling higher integration of clean energy.
