Brahmapur Railway Station Poised for Modern Makeover
Brahmapur Railway Station in southern Odisha, the busiest rail hub in the region handling 162 trains and 25,000 passengers every day, will undergo a multi-phase redevelopment after East Coast Railway sanctioned Rs three billion (Rs 3 bn), officials said. The investment represents the most ambitious overhaul since the station's founding and is aimed at accommodating rising rail traffic and improving passenger facilities. The plan was outlined by East Coast Railway representatives who framed the project as a strategic upgrade for the city.
Central to the scheme is a capacity expansion under the third and fourth line project, which will add three additional railway lines and four new platforms to increase handling of originating, terminating and passing trains. The additional infrastructure is designed to reduce congestion and support better train operations across the corridor and adjoining routes. Work on signalling and yard modifications is included to integrate the new lines with existing traffic patterns.
A new station building will be constructed on the second entry side and existing service buildings and railway quarters will be relocated to free space for a passenger centric layout and commuter convenience. The yard modifications form part of the same package and will allow smoother train movements and stabling arrangements. Project officials described phased execution to limit disruption to daily services during construction.
The redevelopment will reshape how the city connects with the rest of the country by improving capacity, passenger flows and travel experience, and by supporting longer term urban mobility objectives. Planners emphasised the focus on passenger centric facilities and operational efficiency as core outcomes of the scheme. Further technical and scheduling details were not provided in the initial release, and officials said the work will proceed in defined phases over multiple years. Officials also noted measures to coordinate with local authorities to manage traffic and passenger access during construction.
