MMRDA completes key Line 2B harbour crossing
2026-04-29
As per an update shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully executed a critical infrastructure milestone on Metro Line 2B, with the installation of a 42-metre, 178-tonne steel span across the Central Railway Harbour Line corridor between Kurla and Tilak Nagar.
The complex overnight operation involved lifting two composite steel girders using twin 500-tonne cranes. Executed within the limited block window provided by railway authorities, the activity adhered to stringent safety and quality protocols. The exercise required close coordination between MMRDA, Central Railway, and multiple project stakeholders.
Metro Line 2B, an East–West connector linking Maharashtra Nagar–Mandale to DN Nagar, has now achieved 92 per cent completion in civil works, as per the same update. The corridor is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility by reducing travel time by up to 75 per cent, while easing congestion and lowering vehicular emissions.
Once operational, the line will integrate with four Metro corridors, the Monorail, and both Central and Western Railway networks, strengthening multimodal connectivity across Mumbai. The latest span launch marks another step forward in advancing the city’s rapid transit infrastructure under the “Mumbai in Minutes” vision.
