TBM Assembly Advances for BART Tunnel Project

Assembly of a large-diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority’s BART project is progressing at Schwanau, Germany. The over 16-metre machine features a main drive exceeding 300 tonnes, installed using a gantry crane onto the shield.

The blue-painted cutting wheel centre, weighing around 150 tonnes, has been mounted. Precision work continues on the EPB shield’s conveyor screw, requiring accurate alignment during installation.

The project is led by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), USA, highlighting global engineering collaboration and execution expertise.
