Mumbai Metro Line One Maintenance Triggers Peak Hour Delays

Commuters reported severe congestion at stations around nine am and described platforms being stretched to capacity, creating dangerous conditions for travellers. Several passengers said staff were scarce and there were no clear instructions, and many people continued to add to the platform via staircases until some chose alternative transport. A number of those affected switched to BEST buses and arrived one hour late for work. Auto-rickshaws were reported to be scarce amid an unrelated local compliance issue affecting drivers.

The incident renewed criticism that the line continues to operate with four-coach trains despite long standing demands to upgrade to six-coach rakes to increase capacity. A senior opposition member said the situation required urgent intervention and questioned why proposals to increase the number of rakes had not been implemented. Commuters and civic groups said the episode highlighted broader capacity and crowd management challenges on the first metro corridor.

Officials from the Metro one team said they had undertaken rail grinding operations in association with Bangalore Metro as part of a proactive maintenance drive and that temporary speed restrictions were a standard safety protocol, leading to minor delays. The team described the measures as precautionary steps intended to enhance track quality and commuter safety. Authorities said they would monitor operations and continue routine maintenance to uphold safety standards.
