Indian Ocean Ship Sagar Visits Yangon Harbour

The Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar, INS Sunayna, entered Yangon harbour on four May 2026 as part of India’s ongoing maritime engagement in the region. The port call coincided with the visit of Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), underscoring the emphasis on strengthening bilateral naval ties with Myanmar. The arrival followed a ceremonial welcome by the Myanmar Navy and set the tone for the scheduled exchanges and engagements.

Officials said the Myanmar Navy will host the crew of IOS Sagar for official interactions aimed at fostering professional and cultural exchanges between personnel of both navies. Planned activities include visits to Myanmar Navy training establishments to enable the sharing of professional practices and mutual familiarisation of operating procedures. Friendly sports fixtures between service members are expected to complement the professional engagements and support mutual understanding.

The deployment of IOS Sagar and the port call were described as consistent with India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across Regions) vision and with the government’s Neighbourhood First policy. The Indian Navy conveyed that such visits support cooperative maritime engagement in the Indian Ocean Region and contribute to building mutual trust and interoperability. The stopover is part of a broader pattern of routine naval diplomacy aimed at enhancing regional maritime security.

Naval authorities indicated the visit will provide opportunities for crew exchanges and professional dialogue while reinforcing people-to-people links that underpin defence cooperation. The itinerary is designed to balance professional training exchanges with cultural and sporting interactions to strengthen bilateral rapport. The port call concluded routine logistic and diplomatic objectives while signalling sustained engagement in the maritime domain.
