Second TBM Lowered for Mumbai Tunnel Project

The cutterhead of the second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has been successfully lowered at Sawli (Ghansoli) near Mumbai, Maharashtra, marking the final stage of the primary assembly of the machine’s main shield. Measuring 13.6 metres in diameter and weighing 350 tonnes, the cutterhead will support the construction of the project’s 21-km underground tunnel section.

The second TBM will begin its tunnelling journey from Sawli (Ghansoli) towards Vikhroli. Equipped with 84 cutter discs, 124 scrapers and 16 bucket lips, the machine has been designed for efficient excavation and muck removal during underground construction operations.
