Delhi Metro Expansion to Add Rs 180 bn Links

Delhi is set to receive a major metro network upgrade after the chief minister announced an expansion programme valued at Rs 180 billion (bn) to enhance links across North, East, South and Outer Delhi. The plan will connect strategic nodes including Central Vista, the airport, Narela-Najafgarh and Mayur Vihar and is intended to speed up daily commuting for the large number of passengers who use the metro each day. The announcement was made on the social platform X.

The government also approved a separate Kirti Nagar to Palam corridor at Rs 62 billion (bn), which will run through densely populated areas such as Sagarpur. That corridor is expected to shorten journeys between west and south-west parts of the city and provide a direct alternative to heavily congested roads. For regular users this is likely to reduce interchange requirements and ease peak time crowding on several existing lines.

Phase 5B of the Delhi Metro has been cleared to add over 97 km of new lines and 65 new stations across seven routes. The scheme includes Dhansa Bus Stand to Nangloi covering 11.86 km with nine stations, Central Secretariat to Kishangarh covering 15.97 km with 10 stations, Samaypur Badli to Narela spanning 12.89 km with eight stations, and Kirti Nagar to Palam at 9.96 km with six stations. It also comprises Jor Bagh to Mithapur at 16.99 km with 12 stations, Shastri Park to Mayur Vihar Phase III at 13.2 km with eight stations, and Keshavpuram to Rohini Sector 34 at 16.29 km with 12 stations.

Taken together these projects are intended to reduce travel time, lower road congestion and improve the reliability of urban public transport across the national capital. Officials anticipate that passenger journeys will become smoother and more comfortable while pressure on busy interchanges should fall. Timelines for completion were not specified in the announcement and further implementation details will be published by the transport authorities.
