Adani Green Commissions World Largest Single Location Battery System
Adani Green Energy (AGEL) has commissioned a cumulative three point thirty seven Gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda in Gujarat, marking the world’s largest single-location BESS deployment outside China. The deployment consolidates AGEL’s operational battery storage capacity at Khavda and is presented by the company as one of the fastest utility-scale battery storage projects executed globally. The system is intended to strengthen grid reliability and enable renewable generation to supply dependable round-the-clock power at scale.
The project included an earlier one-point 37 GWh addition announced in March 2026 and was delivered within 10 months of the start of on-site construction. AGEL said the commissioning expands its capability to store and dispatch energy, supporting peak-hour supply and system flexibility. The company plans to add over 10 GWh of battery storage capacity in FY27 and to scale capacity to 50 GWh over the next five years.
AGEL described the Khavda BESS as able to store enough clean energy to power nearly one million homes for an entire day and to support peak demand comparable to cities such as Indore, Chandigarh, or the entire state of Goa. The installation can also power more than 12 mn LED bulbs for 10 hours, an outcome the company said illustrates how storage converts intermittent renewable output into dependable dispatchable energy. The project integrates advanced energy management systems with lithium-ion battery technologies to optimise efficiency, reliability and grid responsiveness.
AGEL is developing a larger renewable complex at Khavda, where it aims to build 30 GW by 2029, with nine point nine GW already operational across its portfolio. The company currently reports an operating renewable portfolio of 19.7 GW spread across multiple states and has set a target of achieving 50 GW by 2030. AGEL said its operating sites are certified as water positive, single-use plastic-free and zero waste-to-landfill as part of efforts to build future-ready clean energy infrastructure.
