Caterpillar’s 6040 Mining Shovel

Caterpillar has introduced its next-generation 6040 hydraulic mining shovel, designed to deliver high breakout forces, faster swing cycles and improved fuel efficiency through hydraulic optimisation.

The 400-metric-tonne-class machine integrates more standard technologies, a new cab and improved serviceability to support higher productivity and uptime. The 6040 is powered by new twin 2,079-horsepower Cat C32B engines, enabling shovel operation or movement away from the face using a single engine. Multiple engine configurations are available to meet regional requirements.

With the optional oil change interval extension attachment, engine oil exchange intervals increase from 500 hours to 1,000 hours. Unlike conventional hydraulic systems that operate at maximum cylinder flow and pressure regardless of demand, the 6040’s new hydraulic system dynamically assigns individual pumps or pump groups to deliver the precise flow and pressure required by each hydraulic function.

Caterpillar said this variable, on-demand hydraulic oil flow reduces fuel consumption, excess heat and energy use, while extending component life. The company stated that the system is 15 per cent more efficient than shovels without it.

The five-circuit hydraulic system allows two-cylinder motions, two travel motions and swing. The 6040 delivers 269,996 pound-feet of breakout force in face shovel configuration and 252,460 pound-feet with the backhoe, helping prevent bucket stall in tough materials.
