Manohar Lal Directs Remediation Of Bhalswa Landfill By September

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal directed officials to complete remediation of the Bhalswa landfill site in the national capital by September after an on-site review. He inspected the ongoing legacy waste remediation work undertaken by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and instructed that reclaimed land be utilised for public use and community welfare. The visit was his second in-person inspection of the site.

The Bhalswa dumpsite was adopted under the Dumpsite Remediation and Action Plan initiative, a nationwide mission-mode programme launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban two point zero to remediate major legacy dumpsites and reclaim urban land. The adoption was announced in September 2025 and the on-site launch followed under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign. Officials briefed the Minister on progress of biomining and land reclamation.

The site contained approximately 7.3 million (mn) metric tonne (t) of legacy waste in June 2022 and biomining operations have been undertaken continuously since July 2022, processing around 15,000 t per day. As of May 26 the combined quantity of legacy and fresh waste had reduced and approximately 2.317 mn t remains to be processed. Sustained biomining and remediation efforts have reclaimed nearly 43 acres of land out of the total dumpsite area of about 70 acres.

During the review the Minister examined biomining operations, environmental safeguards, fire prevention measures and leachate management systems and considered the future roadmap for complete remediation. He emphasised expeditious completion to improve environmental conditions and safeguard public health, directed that fresh waste generated daily be processed immediately to prevent accumulation and insisted that no new legacy waste be created. The visit was attended by senior Municipal Corporation of Delhi officers including the Commissioner and the Engineer-in-Chief.
