Maharashtra Government Buys Iconic Air India Building For Rs 16.01 bn

The Maharashtra government has purchased the iconic Air India building in Mumbai for Rs 16.01 billion (bn). The acquisition was announced as part of a move to reduce annual expenditure on office premises. The building is a landmark in the city and housed the airline's corporate offices. The property occupies a central commercial precinct and has been a visible feature of the city skyline.

The purchase will transfer ownership from the airline to the state government and is intended to eliminate recurring lease and rental liabilities. Officials said the move will allow the state to consolidate administrative space and reduce long term occupancy costs. The government will assume responsibility for maintenance and operations of the property. A formal audit of the building's condition is to be completed before full integration.

The price paid was Rs 1,601 crore, which equals Rs 16.01 billion (bn) after standard conversion. Financial advisers noted the acquisition converts a recurring expense into a capital asset for the state. The transaction was presented as improving fiscal efficiency without altering core public services. The accounting effect is to move recurring expenditure into a fixed capital item on the state balance sheet.

The state government indicated the transfer is expected to lower annual expenditure related to rentals and lease management while enabling long term planning for office accommodation. Officials said there will be a review of space utilisation and that surplus areas may be repurposed for other civic functions. The deal forms part of a broader effort to rationalise government assets and control operational outgoings. Valuation adjustments and formal registration procedures will follow to reflect the acquisition in government records.
