Kolkata Metro Expands Use of ABB Solutions Across Network

Kolkata Metro has strengthened its long-standing partnership with ABB by deploying advanced electrification and motion-control solutions across its expanding urban transit network to enhance operational efficiency, reliability and safety.

The collaboration, spanning over 25 years, has supported the development of Kolkata Metro, India's first metro rail system, which today operates across a 72-km network with more than 300 train trips daily and serves over half a million passengers.

ABB's technologies have been deployed across stations, tunnels and other critical infrastructure facilities throughout the network. The portfolio includes low-voltage and medium-voltage gas-insulated switchgear, lightning protection systems, distribution boards and variable frequency drives (VFDs) designed to optimise space utilisation, minimise downtime and improve operational continuity.

ABB Motion's HVAC-dedicated packaged drives have also been installed to manage ventilation and cooling systems across metro stations. The company stated that these systems support passenger comfort, ensure safe ventilation and facilitate smoke extraction during emergencies, while delivering average energy savings of approximately 25 per cent.

"As India accelerates its journey towards low-carbon, smart urban transit, the need for highly efficient and intelligent solutions has never been more urgent," said Kiran Dutt, President – Electrification, ABB India. "Over the past 25 years, ABB has closely partnered with Kolkata Metro to equip its network with future-ready products and solutions across different corridors."

According to ABB, more than 80 per cent of metro rail networks in India currently utilise its technologies. The company added that local manufacturing and innovation under the 'Make in India' initiative continue to support the country's sustainable urban mobility objectives.

ABB's solutions have been deployed across several metro corridors and facilities, including Sealdah-Phoolbagan, Joka-Majerhat, Barun Sengupta-Nazrul Tirtha, Airport and Blue Line corridors, as well as stations such as Dakshineswar, Baranagar and Jai Hind Bimanbandar, India's largest underground metro station.

The technologies support a range of infrastructure functions, from power distribution and electrification to heating, ventilation and air-conditioning applications, contributing to the efficient operation and ongoing expansion of Kolkata Metro's network.
