Assam Expands Power Infrastructure To Meet Rising Demand

The state currently operates 82 substations and a grid with 10,000 megavolt-ampere (MVA) capacity supported by a 5,300 circuit-kilometre transmission network. Officials said these assets form the backbone of distribution and will be expanded to handle increased load. The transmission network allows the transfer of power across regions and supports balancing and reliability of supply.

Planned projects include the construction of 16 new substations, the addition of 6,340 MVA of grid capacity and the commissioning of 957 circuit kilometres of new transmission lines. The programme covers upgrades to existing nodes and the extension of lines into underserved areas. Measures also encompass reinforcement of switchyards and ancillary equipment to optimise network performance.

The rationale for the expansion is to ensure an uninterrupted and reliable electricity supply to every household and to secure the state’s energy needs as demand grows. Authorities described the measures as integral to broader development and industrial initiatives across Assam. Improved capacity is intended to reduce interruptions, enhance voltage stability and support new economic activity.

The chief minister conveyed the update via the social media platform X and indicated that the government will continue to prioritise modernisation, timely commissioning and network resilience. Implementation will be overseen by the relevant departments with periodic progress reports to track capacity additions. Coordination with technical teams and contractors will focus on adherence to timelines and safety standards.
