Srinagar Airport Withdraws Proposed Full Runway Closure
Srinagar International Airport has withdrawn a proposed Notice to Airmen for a full runway closure, ensuring uninterrupted daytime flights this year. An operational update on X said there would be no full airfield closure during 2026 and that operations would continue daily with operational hours from 0800 hours to 1700 hours. Night closures for maintenance will continue until October 2026.
Airlines have been told to update schedules and passengers have been advised to check flight status with their respective carriers before travelling. The airport urged reliance on official channels for authentic updates and emphasised that routine maintenance would proceed without complete runway shutdowns. The clarification aimed to reduce uncertainty among operators and the travelling public.
Earlier the Airports Authority of India had planned Monday and Tuesday runway closures beginning in July and a fortnight in October to carry out essential maintenance. Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah raised the matter with defence and civil aviation ministers and sought alternatives to minimise disruption. He suggested that the nearby Awantipora airfield be made available for civilian flights during maintenance if shutdowns became necessary.
The withdrawal was welcomed by the Jammu and Kashmir administration and tourism representatives, who said the outcome provided significant relief. Officials said the Monday and Tuesday maintenance plan had prompted cancellations and that engagement with central ministers and the prime minister had helped secure a revision. Coordination will continue between airlines, airport operators and the Airports Authority of India to manage watch hours and maintenance windows.
Travellers were advised to confirm timings with their carriers and to allow additional time for check-in and security as maintenance is carried out during non-daylight hours. The airport said airlines will continue to update schedules and that passengers should rely on official airport and airline communications for the latest information. Authorities will monitor the situation and adjust maintenance windows as required to balance safety with operational continuity.
