NITI Aayog Consultation On Critical Mineral Supply Chains

NITI Aayog convened a stakeholder consultation in New Delhi on Wednesday to assess requirements for critical minerals across strategic sectors, bringing together experts from government, research institutions, academia and industry. The meeting aimed to estimate current and future demand, identify supply chain vulnerabilities and discuss measures to strengthen domestic capabilities in exploration, processing and recycling. The exercise formed part of broader efforts to secure mineral value chains essential for economic growth, technological advancement and national security.\n\nDiscussions concentrated on demand projections for clean energy technologies, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing and on strategies to reduce import dependence. Participants evaluated gaps in the domestic value chain and options to expand refining and recycling capacity, enhance geological surveys and promote mission-oriented research and development. The convening also examined international diversification of sources and mechanisms to improve institutional coordination.\n\nA NITI Aayog report cited during the consultation estimated that under the Net Zero Scenario India's cumulative requirement for critical energy transition minerals could reach 169 million tonnes (169 mn t), about 51 per cent higher than under the Current Policy Scenario, with battery-related minerals accounting for a significant share of future demand. The report noted that more than two thirds of cumulative demand is expected to materialise after 2050 and highlighted continued heavy reliance on imports for several key minerals. To address these challenges the report recommended strengthening domestic exploration and mining, expanding refining and recycling capacity and promoting mission-oriented technological development.\n\nThe stakeholder consultation is intended to inform future policy measures aimed at securing critical mineral supply chains and supporting long-term economic, industrial and national security objectives. NITI Aayog indicated that the process reflects its commitment to evidence-based policymaking and to building resilience in critical mineral value chains. The findings are likely to shape initiatives on domestic capacity and international partnerships.
