Srikakulam To Get Greenfield Airport Under UDAN Scheme

The Union Government programme Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagarik (UDAN) is the regional connectivity scheme to improve air links to smaller cities and towns. The modified UDAN has a financial outlay of Rs 288.4 billion (Rs 288.4 bn) for 2026-27 to 2035-36 and aims to develop 100 new airports between 2026 and 2036. The scheme operates through viability gap funding, route concessions and support for regional air connectivity under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) plays a central role in airport development and route support.

An understanding agreement was signed on 15 November 2025 between the Airports Authority of India and the Andhra Pradesh Airport Development Corporation for a greenfield airport at Srikakulam. A feasibility survey has been completed and the airport is planned on 1,383 acres to be developed in two phases. Land acquisition has been taken up for 680 acres in Phase one and 536 acres in Phase two, with officials stating that no villages will be relocated and that fair compensation will be provided to private landowners.

Bhogapuram International Airport in Vizianagaram district is being developed by the GMR Group and had recorded more than 98 per cent progress as of six April 2026. A validation flight carrying the Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu landed at Bhogapuram on six January 2026 during checks of the runway, navigation systems and safety protocols.

Local opposition has emerged from the CPI(M) district unit in Srikakulam, which has expressed concern about the agricultural character of the Uddanam region. Uddanam is known for coconut cultivation and forms a significant agricultural belt in the district, and the matter has drawn public attention. Officials have emphasised that greenfield airports are planned as new aviation facilities on undeveloped land and that project development will seek to balance connectivity and local livelihoods. The UDAN framework continues to guide regional expansion while AAI and state authorities proceed with surveys, land acquisition and necessary clearances.
