CM Announces Rs 1.5 bn Plan To Tackle Jorabat Floods

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a Rs 1.5 billion (Rs 1.5 bn) flood mitigation allocation for Jorabat under the proposed Guwahati Ring Road project following recent flash flooding that disrupted traffic and waterlogged parts of the area. The measure is intended to provide a permanent solution to recurring inundation at one of the principal entry points linking Assam and Meghalaya. The sum has been included in the Detailed Project Report for the ring road.

Consultants engaged on the project are preparing engineering drawings and have been instructed to obtain technical approval from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati before construction commences. Officials said the flood mitigation components under the ring road scheme will include drainage improvements and other civil works designed to reduce run?off and prevent flash inundation in low lying stretches. The government anticipates that these measures will minimise disruption during the monsoon season.

The Chief Minister also highlighted chronic traffic congestion at Jorabat and proposed widening the Digaru-Narangi road into a four?lane highway to ease bottlenecks on the Assam?Meghalaya corridor. The upgraded carriageway is expected to provide an alternative route for vehicles travelling from Jagiroad and adjoining areas to Guwahati, thereby diverting through traffic and reducing delays on the main approaches. The proposal forms part of a broader effort to combine drainage and transport upgrades.

Sarma appealed to members of the legislative assembly from Dimoria and Dispur to cooperate in facilitating land acquisition and implementation of the road expansion and flood works. Authorities will coordinate detailed surveys and clearances ahead of detailed design and tendering, with an emphasis on technical vetting and resilient construction. The government presented the measures during the budget session as a step towards long term resilience and improved connectivity for the region.
