297 Electric Buses to Join HRTC Fleet in Phased Rollout

Himachal Pradesh will induct 297 electric buses into the Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) fleet in a phased manner as part of a major push towards sustainable public transport. Four newly constructed electric bus depots (e-depots) are expected to become operational soon, strengthening the state's green mobility infrastructure.

The announcement was relayed by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri while he chaired the 163rd meeting of the board of directors of HRTC in Shimla. The session concentrated on improving the corporation's functioning and enhancing passenger amenities across the state.

During the meeting directors reviewed trial runs and operational preparedness for the induction and found that formalities were in the final stages, with operations due to begin shortly. The management was instructed to commission the new e-depots at the earliest to support operation and maintenance of the incoming fleet and to ensure reliable services.

Agnihotri expressed concern over a shortage of tyres that had adversely affected some services and directed officials to maintain adequate stocks of tyres and spare parts. He asked the HRTC management to establish advance procurement and alternative supply arrangements so that passenger convenience remains the corporation's top priority and bus operations are not disrupted. Officials also reviewed measures to improve operational efficiency and modernise the corporation, with the phased introduction of electric buses expected to boost green mobility while offering cleaner, quieter and more comfortable travel for commuters.

Officials indicated that the corporation will align driver training and charging schedules with the new fleet rollout and will integrate route planning to maximise utilisation of the electric buses. The management will monitor performance indicators and passenger feedback to refine operations and maintenance practices. These steps are intended to ensure that the transition improves reliability and delivers long term cost and environmental benefits for commuters.
