Kazipet–Vijayawada Triple Rail Line Project Nears Completion

The commissioned sections include Vijayawada–Gangineni, 36 km; Gangineni–Dornakal, 89 km; and Mahabubabad–Kazipet, 70 km. Work on the remaining 25 km Dornakal–Mahabubabad stretch is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed in the coming months. Once commissioned, the entire corridor will have triple-line connectivity and full electrification.

Officials said the project will ease congestion on the existing double-line network, improving movement of passenger and freight trains. The enhanced capacity is expected to facilitate faster transportation of coal to thermal power stations and to improve freight movement for cement and other industries. The additional line would allow South Central Railway to plan more passenger and freight services by reducing traffic bottlenecks.

Full electrification of the route is expected to reduce diesel consumption, lower fuel costs and minimise carbon emissions, offering environmental and operational gains. The upgrade forms part of broader capacity expansion measures across the region, aimed at supporting industrial supply chains and power logistics. South Central Railway presented the works as addressing a strategic bottleneck on the trunk corridor.

Meanwhile, South Central Railway has completed the Kazipet–Balharshah triple railway line and electrification project, with the final 11 km stretch between Asifabad and Sirpur Kaghaznagar commissioned on July 22, completing the 203 km undertaking. That project, launched in 2012 at an estimated cost of nearly Rs 30 bn, is expected to strengthen rail connectivity and increase line capacity across Telangana and neighbouring Maharashtra. The works are described as reinforcing regional links and freight throughput.
