BorgWarner Secures European OEM eTurbo Programme

BorgWarner has secured a new eTurbo programme from a major European vehicle manufacturer for an advanced hybrid passenger car application. Production under the programme is scheduled to begin in 2029.

The contract strengthens BorgWarner’s position in electrified boosting technologies and builds on its existing 400-volt eTurbo platform, which is already in series production.

Dr Volker Weng, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbos and Thermal Technologies, said the award demonstrated customer confidence in the company’s electrified boosting solutions. He added that the continued development of the 400-volt platform would support vehicle manufacturers in meeting demanding performance, efficiency and emissions requirements.

BorgWarner’s eTurbo is an electrically assisted turbocharger that integrates a high-speed electric motor directly onto the turbo shaft to drive the compressor. The system reduces turbo lag, accelerates boost pressure development and provides 20 kW of continuous electrical power and up to 30 kW of peak power.

It can also recover excess exhaust energy and feed the converted electrical power back into the vehicle’s high-voltage system instead of allowing it to be lost through a conventional wastegate.

The latest system introduces remote power electronics, allowing flexible installation within the vehicle and engine compartment. This is expected to simplify integration in applications with limited packaging space.

Designed to operate at speeds of up to 145,000 rpm and exhaust gas temperatures exceeding 1,000°C, the system combines advanced cooling technologies with high-performance silicon carbide-based power electronics.

The eTurbo also supports compliance with emissions standards including Euro 7, Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle regulations and China National 6b standards. It achieves this by reducing exhaust backpressure, eliminating fuel enrichment under high-load conditions and converting waste exhaust energy into usable electrical power.

BorgWarner said it remains the only supplier offering a 400-volt eTurbo system in series production.
