Tamil Nadu has constructed 10 reservoirs under PAP that have a combined storage of 28 tmc of water. Because of disputes over water-sharing, Tamil Nadu was not able to construct the Anamalayar reservoir. According to the project, the state government will reportedly divert water from Nirar, Sholaiyar, Parambikulam, Thunakkadavu, Peruvaripallam and Aliyar (Palar) rivers.
According to reports, a detailed project report will be prepared by the technical expert committee and estimate the cost to construct the Anamalayar dam. The committee members will hold a meeting for the inter-state irrigation department officials soon. As reported, if the Kerala and Tamil Nadu chief ministers discuss the issue, Kerala may well give its approval for the project. A no-objection certificate will be required from the Ministry of Environment for the construction.
The Tamil Nadu government has nominated chief engineer E Tamilarasan, chief engineer R Elangovan, special chief engineer, conservator of forests, Coimbatore, as ex-officio members and chief engineer (hydro), Tangedco, as another ex-officio member for the expert committee.
The Anamalayar reservoir could not be constructed due to various political reasons. Now, the proposed site for construction has been decided near the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border located above the Sholayar dam near Valparai.
The PAP agreement permitted 11 reservoirs to be constructed for Tamil Nadu. But the state government was able to construct only 10 reservoirs including Upper Nirar (0.04 tmc capacity), Lower Nirar dam (0.027 tmc), Sholayar reservoir (5.39 tmc), Parambikulam reservoir (17.82 tmc), Thunakkadavu reservoir (0.66 tmc), Peruvarippallam reservoir (0.62 tmc), Aliyar reservoir (3.86 tmc), Thirumurthy reservoir (1.94 tmc), Upper Aliyar reservoir (0.94 tmc) and Kadamparai reservoir (1.09 tmc). Three reservoirs ? Parambikulam, Thunakkadavu and Peruvarippallam ? are situated inside Kerala.
