WetWaste Processing Facility at Ottupattarai, Coonoor

Microland Limited’s dedicated social development arm, Microland Foundation in partnership with Coonoor Municipality and a local NGO Clean Coonoor enabled the upgradation of the Wet Waste Processing Facility at Ottupattarai in Coonoor through sponsorship Rs 60 Lakhs plus to modernise infrastructure, equipment, and related processes.

The facility receives and scientifically manages different types of organic waste up to 8 TPD from residents of Coonoor, the market, and some bulk generators. The segregated waste gets converted into Grade A certified quality compost capable of being sold to farmers or estates to reinvigorate their regional soil at a nominal price. This marks a major benchmark in creating a decentralised approach in Integrated Waste Management.

The Wet Waste Processing unit had been inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Government, Environment, Climate Change, and Forest Department, Additional Chief Secretary, IAS Supriya Sahu.

There were other dignitaries present such as S.P. Amrith, IAS Collector, The Nilgiris District, M. Wasim Raja, Vice Chairman, Coonoor Municipality, L. Sheela Cathrine, Chairperson, Coonoor Municipality, and T. Krishnamurthy, Commissioner, Coonoor Municipality.

Supriya Sahu said that she is very happy and proud to witness the continuous efforts and remarkable work they are doing for the waste management in the area. The journey commenced with the conversion of a dump yard into a beautiful waste management facility. Today it is augmented further with a dedicated windrow composting yard.

She further added that the upgradation of the wet waste facility is equipped to handle segregated organic domestic kitchen waste, waste from poultry, market waste, and garden waste. The capacity has been set up to handle the spikes amid tourist season and festivals.
