Plans for development of Vilappilsala finally get under way

After a series of unsuccessful attempts to implement projects on the plot owned by the civic body at Vilappilsala, the mini township scheme is gaining momentum. The city corporation has invited expression of interest (EoI) from registered structural consultancy firms or consultants to prepare a detailed project report (DPR), including structural design, of a multi storeyed building proposed at the mini township.

As per the document, the scope of work includes preparation of DPR, including detailed estimate and structural design of a multi-storied residential flat for LIFE Mission having ground plus 10 floors. Each floor will have an area of 581 sq m.

The DPR shall contain details of all provisions for successful completion of the project, including electrification, plumbing, solid waste management, protection works, etc.

Mass protests and objections of the Vilappil panchayat had forced the closure of the waste treatment plant at Vilappilsala in 2011. Since then, the corporation has been envisaging various proposals to make use of the land. The mini township project is the latest in this direction.

As per the latest proposal, 36 acres of land could be converted into a township. The architectural firms were earlier invited to submit an EoI to design the township in such a way that spots shall be identified for urban forest, apartments, convention centre, a residential-cum-training centre, a warehouse and a yard for abandoned vehicles. Separate detailed project reports will be prepared for each project, and based on fund availability, each project will be implemented in a phased manner. Indoor game facilities and residential facilities for technological university are also being planned in the township.
