Govern. Launches Mission to Develop Emerging Tech In Power
The Mission on Advanced and High-Impact Research (MAHIR), a national project to develop, scale,
and implement homegrown technological advancements in India's power sector, was started by the
Ministries of Power (MoP) and New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).The mission intends to support new technology research, development, and demonstration while assisting the government in advancing these technologies to the implementation stage. Initially slated to run from 2023–2024 to 2027–2028, MAHIR will use the Idea to Product technology life cycle strategy.
The MoP, MNRE, and Central Public Sector Enterprises will pay for it.
For the initial research under the mission, eight target areas have been designated, including solid- state refrigeration, carbon capture, alternatives to lithium-ion batteries, green hydrogen for mobility, and high-efficiency fuel cells.
The two-tier organisation of MAHIR will consist of an Apex Committee and a Technical Scoping Committee.
The Apex Committee will approve the research proposals and keep track of the research progress after the TSC surveys and identifies the current and emerging research areas around the world.
