Civic authorities said on Friday that the seepage that was seeping through two of the tunnel's expansion joints, which was visible a few days after it was first discovered flowing out of the joints in Mumbai's recently built Coastal Road southbound tunnel, has ceased.
In the meantime, the three more expansion joints' wet spots are also being controlled. After three more days, the work is anticipated to be finished, and it will be under observation for seven days. According to sources, Bhushan Gagrani, the municipal commissioner, was spotted examining the work being done at the coast road tunnel. L & T, the company that was engaged in the tunnel's construction, has temporarily stopped the leak..
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Amit Saini, overseeing the Mumbai Coastal Road Project, mentioned during his visit to the work site on Friday that although the leakage may have ceased temporarily, a comprehensive examination of the issue is underway to ensure a permanent solution. He reassured Mumbaikars that even if they observe any further leakage, there is no cause for concern as the tunnel's structural integrity remains intact. Additionally, L & T has been tasked with inspecting all remaining joints to prevent any future leaks..
The BMC stated that water was permeating through predetermined expansion joints, and through injection grouting, this seepage has been effectively sealed. They explained that expansion joints are strategically placed every 25-30 m to accommodate contraction and expansion, thereby preserving the structural integrity of the large concrete sections. Officials emphasised that the tunnel is safe for motorists and is under continuous monitoring.
