Centre, Karnataka To Support Mango Farmers Amid Price Drop
2025-06-23

In a significant move to support mango farmers in Karnataka facing falling prices, the Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced that the Central and State governments will jointly compensate farmers for the price difference under an existing central scheme.
The decision was finalised during a virtual meeting between Union Agriculture Minister Shri Chouhan and Karnataka Agriculture Minister Shri N. Chaluvaraya Swamy. Union Agriculture Secretary Shri Devesh Chaturvedi also attended the video conference.
The two ministers agreed that compensation would be provided for 2.5 million metric tonnes of mangoes, particularly the Totapuri variety, whose prices have fallen sharply in recent weeks. Karnataka had earlier submitted a proposal to the Centre highlighting that both tomato and mango prices had been declining, with mango growers, especially of the Totapuri variety, facing substantial losses.
Under the new plan, the Central and State governments will equally share the cost of the price difference from the normal market rate, providing relief to farmers affected by low returns. The support will apply to 2.5 million metric tonnes of mangoes out of the estimated 10 million metric tonnes produced in the state this season.
During the discussions, the Karnataka Agriculture Minister informed the Union Minister that while tomato prices were a concern earlier, they have now stabilised and do not require immediate intervention.
Shri Chaluvaraya Swamy expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for the prompt decision to safeguard the interests of mango growers in the state. The move is expected to ease economic pressure on farmers and provide a timely boost during the ongoing harvest season.
