Nagpur Metro Okays Kanhan Extension, Adds Rs 3 Billion Spur

MahaMetro’s Phase 2 plan for Nagpur is set to expand again as a 1.3-kilometre spur from Automotive Square to Kanhan village heads for clearance by Maharashtra’s chief secretary next month.

The proposal, lodged with the state in April, features a 500-metre steel viaduct across the Kanhan River and a new Kanhan station, lifting the Kamptee corridor to 13 stops and pushing the Phase 2 network beyond 45 kilometres. Estimated at Rs 3 billion, the extension promises smoother last-mile links for thousands in north-eastern suburbs and relief from chronic traffic.

Senior officials emphasise that all planning, engineering and environmental data will be presented in detail before the final state sign-off. Once approved, the file moves to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for central clearance, expected within months.

Meanwhile, mainline Phase 2 construction continues apace: works at Lok Vihar, Pili Nadi and Kamptee Police Station progress, with Lok Vihar scheduled for commissioning by November 2025. Land acquisition across the phase is reported over 90 per cent complete.
