Bihar Signs MoU for Patna Water Metro
2025-09-27
The Bihar Tourism Department and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to introduce a Water Metro service in Patna, aiming to strengthen inland water transport and boost tourism in the region.
Under the memorandum, both agencies will collaborate to plan, develop, and operate water metro services along riverine routes in Patna. The proposed service is expected to enhance connectivity across the city through waterways, offering commuters an alternative to road traffic and contributing to decongestion and sustainable transport.
Key features of the proposed Water Metro include modern water vessels, dedicated terminals, safety infrastructure, and integration with existing urban transport systems. The partnership leverages IWAI’s expertise in inland waterway navigation along with the Tourism Department’s experience in promoting regional attractions and passenger services.
Officials anticipate that the water metro will not only provide a scenic and efficient mode of transport but will also encourage recreational and heritage tourism along Patna’s riverfronts. The service is likely to support local economic development, create employment, and improve access to riverine neighborhoods.
The agreement marks a significant step towards realizing Bihar’s ambitions in sustainable urban mobility while tapping into the advantages of the Ganges and tributaries. Implementation will require further technical studies, funding plans, environmental clearances, and alignment with regional waterway networks.
The MoU signals strong interagency commitment to transforming Patna’s waterways into viable transit corridors, positioning the city among Indian metros exploring water-based urban transport options.
