India Achieves 490 MWh Energy Storage Capacity by June 2025

The CEA report highlights that 16 energy storage systems are currently operational across 10 states, with major installations in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. These include both standalone and co-located battery systems deployed by leading renewable developers.
Solar-linked energy storage accounts for around 72 per cent of the total capacity, followed by hybrid and wind projects. The installed capacity is expected to rise sharply with upcoming tenders from SECI and NTPC, targeting an additional 4 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) by 2026.
Experts note that India’s progress marks a pivotal stage in achieving its 500 GW renewable energy target by 2030. The government’s focus on flexible power systems and energy storage incentives is expected to further strengthen the country’s transition to a low-carbon grid.
