SECL Leads in Cleanliness and Sustainability Under SCDPM 5.0

Under Special Campaign 5.0, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a leading subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has set new benchmarks in cleanliness, sustainability, and inclusivity. Through innovative waste management, recycling, mechanised cleaning, and women empowerment initiatives, SECL has demonstrated how a major coal producer can champion both environmental responsibility and social progress.

At the heart of SECL’s efforts is its flagship “Waste to Wealth” project at Gevra, Asia’s largest coal mine. The initiative focuses on scientific segregation of waste at source, followed by treatment at a Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centre. The biodegradable fraction is converted into nutrient-rich compost, which supports SECL’s extensive plantation drives and enhances soil fertility — truly embodying the idea of turning trash into treasure and establishing a model circular economy in mining operations.

Adding a creative dimension to sustainability, SECL’s Central Excavation Workshop (CEWS), Gevra, has transformed industrial scrap into large-scale artworks. These include a striking S-400 missile model with a robotic soldier, a replica of the BrahMos missile at the Korba Area, and a majestic statue of a coal miner crafted entirely from discarded machine parts and bearings at Hasdeo Area. These art installations reflect SECL’s innovative approach to combining environmental awareness with industrial artistry.

In a significant step towards women empowerment, SECL inaugurated its first women-operated Store Unit for spare parts management and supply at Korba, creating new avenues for female participation in core industrial operations.

To enhance cleanliness and workplace safety, SECL has introduced 20 mechanical road-sweeping machines across nine operational areas for dust-free cleaning of coal transportation routes and colony roads.

Complementing these efforts, SECL also organised health and wellness camps for employees and residents, felicitated Safai Mitras for their contributions to cleanliness, installed bio-toilets in mining areas, and carried out Swachhata Hi Seva – Swachhotsav 2025 drives at prominent community sites, including the banks of the Arpa River.

Through these integrated initiatives, SECL continues to redefine the role of the mining industry in advancing sustainability, social inclusion, and innovation. Its achievements under Special Campaign 5.0 highlight a future-ready coal sector — one that balances productivity with environmental stewardship and community welfare.
