India’s Power Use Drops 6 Per Cent In October

India’s power consumption fell by 6 per cent to 132 billion units in October, compared with 140.47 billion units in the same month last year. The decline was largely driven by reduced use of cooling appliances as unseasonal rainfall and lower temperatures curbed electricity demand across several regions.

According to power sector data, October witnessed widespread rainfall in many parts of the country, coinciding with the onset of winter. Experts noted that the cooler weather helped stabilise temperatures, reducing the need for air conditioning and fans in both households and commercial spaces.

Peak power demand in October stood at 210.71 gigawatts (GW), down from 219.22 GW recorded in October 2024. By contrast, India’s all-time highest peak power demand was about 250 GW, reached in May 2024. The previous record stood at 243.27 GW in September 2023.

This year’s summer months, beginning in April, also saw record power requirements, with the June 2024 peak touching 242.77 GW. However, the recent fall in consumption reflects seasonal moderation and the temporary easing of electricity load as cooler conditions prevail.

Experts anticipate that both power demand and overall consumption will remain subdued through November due to lower temperatures and reduced dependence on cooling systems.
