FutureCoal Launches India Chapter to Advance Sustainable Coal

FutureCoal, the Global Alliance for Sustainable Coal, has announced the launch of its India Chapter, marking a significant step in strengthening international collaboration on technology-driven decarbonisation and energy security in one of the world’s largest coal economies. The India Chapter will be chaired by PM Prasad, former Chairman and Managing Director, Coal India Limited.

The launch comes at a time when governments and industries are reassessing energy strategies amid rising power demand, cost pressures, and the need for reliable electricity supply. With India surpassing one billion tonnes of coal production in FY 2024–25 and coal-based power accounting for nearly 72 percent of total electricity generation, the India Chapter aims to bring together stakeholders across the coal value chain to promote modern, sustainable practices.

“As a global growth centre and manufacturing powerhouse, coal is critical to achieving the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” said PM Prasad, Chairman, FutureCoal India Chapter. “Through our India Chapter, we will connect industry, government, and international partners to build a modern, technology-driven sector that strengthens energy security and supports responsible emissions reduction.”

The India Chapter will unite producers, consumers, and suppliers from sectors such as power, cement, and steel around FutureCoal’s Sustainable Coal Stewardship (SCS) Roadmap. The framework promotes proven technologies including High-Efficiency Low-Emissions (HELE) generation, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), coal gasification, and coal-to-products pathways that can significantly lower emissions while improving resource efficiency.

The initiative is supported by founding members including Coal India and Gainwell Engineering, further strengthening FutureCoal’s presence across Asia following the recent launch of its Southern Africa Chapter.

“Through global collaboration and adoption of the SCS roadmap, members are already deploying technologies that increase efficiency, reduce emissions, and improve safety,” said Sunil Chaturvedi, Chairman, Gainwell Engineering.

Senior government leaders welcomed the move, highlighting India’s scale, operational experience, and growing sophistication in coal production. The India Chapter is expected to act as a bridge between domestic priorities and global best practices, positioning India as a key contributor to sustainable coal stewardship while supporting long-term energy transition goals.
