Sindhudurg Airport Gets DGCA Approval for 24×7 Operations

Sindhudurg Airport in Maharashtra’s Konkan region has received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to operate round the clock, including during low visibility and adverse weather conditions, according to a statement issued by IRB Infrastructure Developers.

The airport, which is operated by IRB Infrastructure, began commercial operations in October 2021. With the latest clearance, the facility has been certified for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), enabling aircraft to operate safely even in challenging weather and visibility conditions.

“The approval for 24×7 all-weather operations significantly enhances the airport’s reliability and operational capability. This will encourage airline confidence, support sustained traffic growth, and contribute meaningfully to economic and tourism development across the Konkan region,” said Jai S Sadana, Chief Adviser and Head, IRB Sindhudurg Airport.

The DGCA approval covers the implementation of satellite-based Required Navigation Performance (RNP) procedures along with the availability of a backup navigation aid. These systems provide pilots with precise instrument approach guidance, while also ensuring a dependable non-satellite backup, allowing safer landings and more reliable flight operations throughout the year for all aircraft types.

RNP refers to the level of navigational performance required for specific flight procedures or designated airspace, enabling more accurate and efficient aircraft operations.

Improved connectivity is also expected in the coming months, with the proposed commencement of the Mumbai–Sindhudurg route under the state’s regional connectivity scheme. The new service is likely to make air travel more convenient for residents of the Konkan region while attracting visitors from across the country, Sadana said.

IRB Infrastructure further noted that Sindhudurg Airport recorded close to 11,000 passenger movements in December for the first time. To support rising traffic, the airport has doubled its aircraft parking capacity from three to six aircraft stands, strengthening its readiness for future growth.
