Railways Advance Kalyan–Murbad Line And Mumbai Capacity Expansion

"Indian Railways is advancing multiple rail infrastructure projects in Maharashtra, including the sanctioned Kalyan–Murbad new line and sizable investments under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project and the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project. The Kalyan–Murbad 28 km new line has been sanctioned at Rs 8.36 billion (bn) on a 50:50 cost-sharing basis with the Government of Maharashtra and has been declared a Special Railway Project for land acquisition; proposals covering 214 hectares are at various stages of acquisition. Budgetary outlay for projects falling fully or partly in Maharashtra has increased markedly from Rs 11.71 billion (bn) per year in the earlier period to Rs 237.78 billion (bn) in 2025-26, reflecting the expanded focus on network growth and safety works.

Train handling capacity in the Mumbai region is being expanded through platform extensions, additional platforms, pit lines, sick lines and stabling lines at multiple stations. About 120 originating Mail and Express trains and about 3,200 suburban trains are handled daily in the Mumbai area; platform extension works at 34 stations have been taken up to enable 15-car EMU operations and 238 new door-fitted suburban rakes of 12 cars each have been sanctioned under MUTP at a cost of Rs 192.93 billion (bn). Major MUTP programmes sanctioned include MUTP-II at Rs 80.87 billion (bn), MUTP-III at Rs 109.47 billion (bn) and MUTP-IIIA at Rs 336.90 billion (bn), which together cover dedicated corridor upgrades and additional lines.

Progress on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project continues, with substantial civil works completed in the Gujarat section and ongoing works in Maharashtra. In Gujarat foundation and piers have been completed over the full 352 km stretch and girder casting and launching have advanced; in Maharashtra foundation works extend to 84 km with pier and girder works under progress and foundation work completed at eight stations. Excavation at Bandra Kurla Complex has reached about 91 per cent and the under-sea tunnel works have progressed with four point eight km completed between Ghansoli and Shilphata.

Rail freight capacity is being enhanced through Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminals, with 128 terminals commissioned and in-principle approvals for 288 across the network; nine of the commissioned terminals are in Maharashtra and approvals for 22 more have been issued. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor includes about 178 route km in Maharashtra, representing about 12 per cent of the corridor, and connectivity works to port terminals are under way. The Union Minister for Railways provided these details in a written reply to questions in the Lok Sabha, outlining surveys, sanctioned works and timelines for completion."
