Mahatransco Commissions 400 kV Line To Boost Mumbai Power Supply

The 228 km project was executed by Kalpataru Projects International Limited and involved the erection of 715 transmission towers, of which 485 towers with 304 circuit km of stringing were completed under the Nashik division and 230 towers with 152 circuit km were completed under the Vashi division. The scheme was originally approved in 2010 and had been slated for completion in 2013 but encountered technical and administrative hurdles that delayed delivery. Work was finally completed in March 2026 after the resolution of permissions and logistical issues.

Challenges during construction included securing clearances near the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in Pune district, addressing land compensation disputes, obtaining forest clearances and resolving right of way constraints. In densely forested stretches materials were transported manually and advanced hotline stringing techniques were deployed in critical sections to expedite work while ensuring safety. The addition is expected to reduce load on the Padghe–Babhaleshwar transmission corridor and provide an additional power source to the Kudus substation.

The project completion was overseen by the Chief Minister and Energy Minister, with support from the Minister of State for Energy, the Additional Chief Secretary for energy and the Mahatransco chairman and managing director, and involved coordination with Nashik and Vashi division officials, government agencies, police and forest departments. Mahatransco indicated the commissioning represents a significant enhancement of the state transmission network and will contribute to more reliable supply for the rapidly growing Mumbai region. Further operational adjustments are expected as the new line is integrated into the wider grid.
