Final Batch Of Two 3,300 HP Locomotives Reach Mozambique

The final batch of two 3,300 horsepower (hp) locomotives manufactured by Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) has reached Mozambique, marking completion of an export consignment. The locomotives arrived at Maputo harbour and were cleared for onward movement to the national rail operator. The shipment closes a programme that began with earlier consignments delivered over the past months.

Banaras Locomotive Works, a production unit of Indian Railways, built the locomotives under a contract with the Mozambican rail authority and managed the final inspections and commissioning preparations prior to dispatch. BLW handled testing, certification and packing in India before the locomotives were loaded for maritime transport. The delivery completes the manufacture and overseas transfer obligations under the agreement. Training for local crews and technical staff was included in the delivery programme.

The locomotives are rated at 3,300 horsepower and have been configured for operations on Mozambique track specifications, with adaptations carried out during assembly at the BLW facility. Engineers completed static and dynamic tests and final tuning to ensure compliance with the technical parameters agreed with the customer. Documentation and spares consignments were included to support initial commissioning and operation. Spare parts and technical manuals were shipped alongside the locomotives to facilitate rapid commissioning and reduce downtime.

The completion of the shipment is expected to strengthen Mozambique's motive power resources and support freight and passenger services as planned by the rail operator. BLW said the programme demonstrated its capacity to execute international projects and meet delivery schedules despite logistical challenges. The manufacturer added that after-sales support arrangements have also been made to assist with commissioning and maintenance in the initial months after arrival.
