RICS Launches Mediation Training Programme in India

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has launched its internationally recognised Mediation Training Programme in India to equip professionals in construction, real estate, infrastructure and legal sectors with specialised dispute resolution skills.

The move comes amid growing concerns over project delays and cost overruns. According to Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data, nearly 779 major infrastructure projects are running behind schedule, while around 450 have exceeded sanctioned budgets, resulting in cost overruns nearing Rs 5 trillion.

The five-day, face-to-face programme, scheduled from 29 June to 4 July 2026 in New Delhi, will be conducted in partnership with the India Council of Arbitration. Led by John Fletcher, Executive Director, Dispute Resolution Service, the training combines facilitative and evaluative mediation approaches tailored to the built environment sector.

"The future of dispute resolution will not be defined solely by who wins a case, but by how effectively parties can preserve relationships, minimise disruption, and create sustainable outcomes," said Ashwani Awasthi, Managing Director – RICS, South Asia.

Participants completing the programme will be eligible to apply for empanelment with mediation panels, including those of the Indian Council of Arbitration and the RICS International Panel of Dispute Resolvers, subject to fulfilling other requirements. The programme is also recognised by the International Mediation Institute, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Civil Mediation Council.
