BIS launches performance standards for electric car batteries

The Bureau of Indian Criteria (BIS) has introduced performance standards for electric car batteries to protect customer safety.

According to the media sources, the performance criteria for electronic car batteries have been issued by BIS, the nation's standards-setting agency that reports to the consumer affairs ministry.

An official told the media that the IS 17855: 2022 has been developed for lithium-ion traction battery packs and systems of electrically-propelled road vehicles, and it has been harmonised with ISO 12405-4: 2018.

The test technique for the fundamental performance, dependability and electrical functionality for battery packs and systems for either high power or high energy applications is included in the new EV batteries standard.

The battery system is being delivered or stored, the working battery at low and high temperatures, and other real-world scenarios for an electric car were taken into consideration when developing this standard. As a result, different tests are included in this standard.

The official added that the rechargeable batteries and an electric motor are what power EVs.

Electric vehicles have become more widely known and more readily available during the past ten years. Due to their excellent power-to-weight ratio, lithium-ion batteries are used in the majority of electric cars.

The BIS is in the process of releasing two more standards related to batteries for various passenger and goods carrying vehicles (L, M, and N categories), taking into account the safety aspect of batteries for electric cars.
