Ring road to be expanded from Keshavbaug To Shyamal

The AMC plans to widen the 132 foot Ring Road between Shyamal and Keshavbaug, providing commuters and residents with some relief from traffic congestion. From Keshavbaug to the Shyamal crossroad, the road will be widened by one lane on both sides.

The road is currently three lanes on both sides, making the 132 foot Ring Road a six-lane road. One additional lane on both sides will increase the road's capacity to four lanes, bringing it to eight lanes on two sides.

As part of the road widening project, the footpath and parking space will be redesigned and covered. This will make the stretch completely paved - almost wall to wall - and dust-free. There will also be footpaths on both sides of bridges on service roads, as well as lanes connecting the service roads.

The budget for the project is Rs 6.5 crore, and work is expected to begin soon.

Trees along the road will be relocated or trimmed to minimise their impact on the greenery. The road can be widened where there are first homes and buildings, then a footpath, a service road, a parking space, and finally the main road. This is the current state of affairs. Footpaths along complexes will be redesigned to accommodate four-wheelers and two-wheelers. The road will be widened to accommodate the new parking space. Furthermore, no land from residential or commercial properties will be cut down for road widening. There is also talk of extending the widening from Shyamal to APMC.

All departments involved have received letters regarding the road widening. The road also experiences significant waterlogging during the monsoon because the main drainage lines are at least 30 years old and thus rain water does not drain easily from the road.

Population, residences, and commercial buildings have increased dramatically in the last 30 years, nearly doubling the capacity of the designed plan. As a result, it was decided to modify rather than replace the drainage lines installed by AUDA. Drainage lines will be coated from the inside with Fibre Resistance of Concrete (FRC), a resin mixture that will strengthen the drainage line. This will increase the life of the drainage line by at least 25 years and reduce flooding in the area.

Additional city engineer, South West Zone, Vijay Patel, said, “The aim is to reduce traffic bottlenecks and make traffic movement smooth. What places will have a small footpath and which will have large ones will be decided as per the situation on the site.”
