Emirates, Boeing partner to revolutionise aircraft maintenance

The primary focus of this collaboration is to revolutionise maintenance practices, with an emphasis on leveraging drone-assisted inspections, enhancing precision in maintenance tasks through virtual and augmented reality, and implementing advanced prognostic and predictive maintenance techniques.

Ahmed Safa, Divisional Senior Vice President of Emirates Engineering, expressed the significance of the partnership, stating, "Our collaboration with Boeing will empower us to harness the benefits of advanced technologies and digital excellence to enhance operational reliability, minimise disruptions, and ensure our fleet operates at the highest standards, ultimately delivering an enhanced travel experience for our customers."

Brad Surak, Boeing's Vice President of Digital Aviation Solutions, highlighted that supporting customers in their digital transformation extends beyond improving maintenance operations. It involves innovation to meet current operational needs while ensuring long-term success.

The integration of drone technology in maintenance represents a significant advancement for Emirates, enabling swift exterior inspections through high-resolution cameras capable of capturing every angle. This facilitates the creation of precise reports for future audits.

The adoption of Mixed Reality, incorporating augmented and virtual reality tools, enables engineers to explore intricate aircraft components, promising more comprehensive inspections, reduced human error, and decreased aircraft downtime. This ultimately optimises fleet availability and performance.

Furthermore, the incorporation of next-generation prognostic and predictive maintenance technology provided by Boeing utilises advanced analytics and prognostic insights, enabling Emirates to make more informed decisions regarding fleet maintenance.

Emirates Engineering is recognised as one of the world's most technologically advanced aircraft maintenance facilities. Managing a massive fleet of Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 aircraft, their extensive 400,000 square meter facility comprises 12 hangars, the largest free-spanned structures in the Middle East. This facility oversees all aspects of maintenance, engineering, quality, planning, and logistics.
