BASF Expands Ultrason® P for EU food-contact Compliance
2026-03-24
BASF has expanded its Ultrason® P portfolio to help manufacturers comply with the European Union’s Regulation 2024/3190, which restricts bisphenols in food-contact materials. The updated range of polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) grades is free from Bisphenol A (BPA) and Bisphenol S (BPS), enabling producers to re-qualify applications affected by the regulation within the defined transition timelines.
The regulation, which came into force in January 2025, prohibits hazardous bisphenols and their derivatives in food-contact articles, with transition periods extending up to January 2028 depending on the product category. Materials such as polyethersulfone (PESU), polysulfone (PSU) and polyetherimide (PEI), widely used in high-temperature applications, are expected to be impacted by the ban. PPSU, however, remains unaffected and offers a viable alternative for manufacturers seeking compliance.
BASF’s expanded portfolio includes six tailored Ultrason® P grades, now ready for sampling with complete technical data sheets, material certificates and food-contact approvals. These grades are designed to support diverse manufacturing needs, offering benefits such as easy mold release, flexibility in colour options from opaque to translucent, and consistent high performance. Key properties include temperature-independent mechanical strength, resistance to detergents, oils, fats and steam, as well as strong dimensional stability and durability.
“Bisphenols as defined in the EU regulation 2024/3190 are not used in the manufacture of our Ultrason® P,” said Georg Graessel, global business management Ultrason® at BASF. “We have adapted and extended this portfolio to give manufacturers sufficient time to test and re-qualify their food-contact products until the ban takes full effect in the EU. Technical data sheets and required certificates can be provided to support qualification processes. Existing injection molding tools for PESU can continue to be used.”
The Ultrason® range, including E, S and P variants, is widely used across household, catering, filtration, automotive and aerospace applications, offering a high-performance alternative to traditional materials such as metals, glass and ceramics.
