NHAI Floats Tender For Strengthening Pamban Road Bridge

The repair scope includes structural restoration of damaged concrete, corrosion treatment of exposed steel reinforcement and epoxy injection to seal cracks, as well as strengthening of bridge components using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) technology. The carriageway will be stripped and relaid with a waterproof membrane and fresh bituminous surfacing, while new drainage spouts will be installed and damaged railings reconstructed. Stainless steel handrails will be provided and fresh road markings and upgraded traffic safety features introduced to reduce future deterioration.

Officials stated that the project has been scheduled for completion within 12 months and that the contractor will be responsible for maintaining the bridge for five years thereafter. The structure, formally known as the Annai Indira Gandhi Road, is on the Ramanathapuram-Dhanushkodi section of National Highway 87. Heavy rainfall combined with continuous movement of heavy vehicles has been cited as a contributing factor to the accelerated wear, prompting the comprehensive intervention.

Local activists welcomed the decision and highlighted that the connecting metal joints had particularly weakened and were damaged during every spell of rain, posing a risk to motorists; they urged timely completion with minimal traffic disruption. Authorities expect that the strengthened bridge and upgraded safety measures will improve resilience and provide a more reliable link for residents and commercial traffic. The tender invitation marks a significant step towards preserving the vital connection to Rameswaram island.
